Teacher shot in face at school meeting

A KWAZULU-NATAL primary school teacher was shot and wounded during a staff meeting

Thulani Gasa, 45, was shot in the face at the Nkashiyane Primary School, near Cramond, on Tuesday, Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said.

The gunman entered the school around 8am and asked to see Gasa, but was asked to wait outside the staffroom since a meeting was under way. A short time later he entered the office, fired a shot at Gasa and ran away.

Gasa was taken to a Pietermaritzburg hospital, about 30km away, in a stable condition.

The motive for the shooting is unknown and the gunman is still at large.

KwaZulu Natal education MEC Senzo Mchunu and head of department Nkosinathi Sishi wished the teacher a speedy recovery. They said they hoped the perpetrator would be brought to book.

Departmental spokesperson Mbali Thusi said, "We have sent our district officials to provide support to the teachers and pupils.

"They will facilitate trauma counselling because witnessing an incident like this is not good."

The safety of teachers at KwaZulu-Natal schools has been threatened over the last few years.

The South African Democratic Teachers Union and National Professional Teachers Organisation of South Africa were unavailable for comment yesterday.

- In 2009 Impunga High School teacher Mkululi Ndlovu was shot dead near his school.

- In 2007 a teacher from Somashi High School in Umsinga was shot several times on the school premises, while some pupils were studying for their final exams.

- This came just weeks after a principal, also in Umsinga, was stoned to death. His body was found in an open field.

- In 2005 a 47-year-old teacher was stabbed in the neck at Swayimane High School in Wartburg, while arguing with two men over school fees.
