Agribee-land bank fraud trial date set

THE trial date for former Land Bank CEO Phil Mohlahlane and former Gauteng housing MEC Dan Mofokeng has been set for November 7.

The duo, with Limpopo attorney Matoba Maponya and former AgriBEE manager Khutso Mosoma, were arrested by the Hawks in March after an investigation dating back to 2008.

They were released on R40000 bail each by the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria. Charges have been withdrawn against Mosoma.

The remaining trio briefly appeared in court yesterday and the matter was postponed for plea and trial.

They are implicated in an investigation relating to R14million transferred from the AgriBEE fund, which was meant to assist cash-strapped black farmers.

The money was allegedly moved to the trust account of Matoba Maponya attorneys. In 2009 the Sunday Times reported Mohlahlane and Mofokeng allegedly diverted money from the fund to buy cars and houses.

Mofokeng had allegedly bought a Mercedes-Benz CLS55 AMG for cash, and a R2million luxury home in Six Fountains near Pretoria with money from the fund.

He also allegedly helped his sister-in-law become a shareholder in a Limpopo farm, paying for the farm with R6,5million from the fund.

Mohlahlane, who was both head of the agriculture department section that approved AgriBEE project funding and acting CEO of the Land Bank when money from the fund was disbursed, allegedly used fund money to buy a R2,7million home in Kyalami.
