DJ goes to court over Zulu shield

Wants R10 million apology

THE National Heritage Council has come out in support of Ukhozi FM DJ Ngizwenkosi Mchunu who has taken the King Shaka International Airport to the Equality Court for confiscating his traditional shield and threatening to destroy it.

Mchunu, who co-hosts a traditional maskandi music programme, is demanding R10 million for hate speech and defamation and a public apology after security guards allegedly wanted to destroy his shield, called an ihawu, saying it carried foot-and-mouth disease.

NHC chief executive Sonwabile Mancotywa said: "It is startling, in this day and age, almost to a point of annoyance, that South Africans still find deplorable ways to oppress each other in a 17-year-old democracy".

Mchunu was returning from Dubai in April where he represented South Africa as a traditional ambassador at a function in the United Arab Emirates.

He left his shield on the luggage conveyor belt and when he went back to fetch it, he was confronted by two security guards.

The case begins next Tuesday.
