ANC Limpopo meets this weekend

THE ANC in Limpopo will hold its provincial general council (PGC) on Sunday, with the party's three regions being set to push for an early elective conference

Mpumalanga, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Northern Cape will hold their conferences next year.

Early this year the provincial executive committee (PEC) of the ANC in Limpopo took a resolution to hold the conference in June next year, but Sowetan has learnt that the Sekhukhune, Mopani and Capricorn regions have vowed to persuade the PGC to hold the conference this October.

Those who want to push for an early conference are apparently Premier Cassel Mathale's "lieutenants", who want to "ensure that those against his bid to serve a second term as both premier and chairperson were flushed out".

"We are fed up with their divisive leadership style and want the current provincial secretary (Joe Maswanganyi) to be replaced by former SACP provincial secretary and MEC for local government Soviet Lekganyane," said Khothongo Matome Mopai of the Peter Teanet branch of the ANC in Mopani.

Speaking to Sowetan yesterday provincial secretary, Maswanganyi said the branches had the right to decide on conferences.

"But that decision must first be passed on to the NEC of the ANC for approval," Maswanganyi said.

He said the PGC would, among other things, discuss issues relating to work done in terms of the resolutions of the previous PGC and issues around service delivery.

The three regions allegedly want Mathale to remain chairperson, Dickson Masemola t his deputy, Soviet Lekganyane as secretary, Pinky Kekana as deputy secretary and Vhembe district municipality mayor Florence Nzhombere as treasurer.
