Woman sues hospital

A WOMAN who is suing Sebokeng Hospital after nurses allegedly left her swimming in her own blood during childbirth may not be able to bear children in future.

A spokesperson for the law firm attending to the woman's lawsuit, Sunelle van Heerden, would, however, not disclose the amount the woman was claiming but said it was "substantial".

Bridget Moleboheng is suing the hospital following a harrowing experience when nurses allegedly left her to give birth on her own.

The nurses are said to have left the room in which Moleboheng was giving birth to chat instead.

Her crime was to "ask too many questions" and was called a "madam" for her troubles.

"Because I had the temerity to request that I be attended to, I was called madam and everybody went out of their way to be rude to me," Moleboheng said.

"Instead of helping me and telling me what to do, the nurses stood around chatting to each other about their personal lives, ignoring my pleas for help.

"The nurses kept screaming at me that I should keep quiet. At this point the baby was being born and still I was being ignored," she said.

"While I was in agony and scared to push on my own, the nurses left the ward to sit at the corridor and continued chatting and laughing."

She said her anguish continued when nurses again refused to assist her baby girl, who had "turned purple".

Meanwhile, she was up to her neck in blood and lying naked in full view of strangers.

Moleboheng said she passed out a number of times before she was attended to and given a blood transfusion.

Gauteng health spokesperson Simon Zwane said his department was yet to receive a summons from Moleboheng's lawyers.
