Loos remain open

Was Malema and Mbululua's visit to Moqhaka plain electioneering?

TWO months after the ANC dispatched its heavyweights to sort out the Rammulotsi open toilet scandal, many still remain open.

More than 700 of the 1 623 open toilets that grabbed headlines in May are still without enclosures. When Sowetan visited the area this week only 200 of the facilities were enclosed .

The open toilets in the ANC-led Moqhaka Municipality rocked the ruling party in the build-up to the local government elections in May.

In the wake of the embarrassing eyesore the ANC dispatched its youth league president Julius Malema, Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula and Free State premier Ace Magashule to reassure residents who had to relieve themselves in full view of their neighbours that toilets would be enclosed.

Malema scolded then mayor Mantebu Mokgosi for not having dealt with the issue before it made national headlines which embarrassed the ruling party.

He told angry residents that "heads must roll" before promising Mantsho Ndesi, 60, that "tomorrow there will be action".

But Malema's tough talk seems to have been nothing but politicking because he has not returned to the area after elections.

Youth league spokesperson Floyd said yesterday Malema had not returned to Rammulotsi but would leave the task of holding people accountable to the Free State provincial youth league executive.

"We called on the leadership of the (ANC) Youth League in the province to hold those responsible (for building open toilets) accountable," Shivambu said.

He could not say how many toilets had been enclosed.

"We understand that the toilets will be enclosed in phases. When we went there, we saw contractors hard at work but we don't know how many toilets have been closed because we are not familiar with the pace of the construction."

ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said Luthuli House (ANC head office) was "expecting a report from the (Free State) province" but admitted that they did not know how far the program of toilet enclosing process was.

Magashule's spokesperson William Bulwane said "97 to 98 percent of toilets have been enclosed" and that a report on the matter was ready. But Bulwane later changed his tune saying "I cannot deny or confirm that it has been written."

DA councillor in ward 19, Mosa Makoele, said Bulwane was "lying". He said many houses in wards 20, 21, 22 and 25 still had open toilets.
