Resignations hit ANC-run councils
THE ANC has been hit by mass withdrawals in the Vhembe district municipality and other local councils under its jurisdiction, while voters are expecting councillors to knuckle down and deliver services.
Less than a month after the mayors of the Vhembe district municipality, Thulamela and Makhado local municipalities said the time for electioneering was over and that they would start delivering services to the people, it seems there will be by-elections in seven wards in Makhado.
Vhembe ANC regional secretary Khathu Netshifhefhe confirmed that seven ward councillors in the Makhado municipality had resigned.
"The situation is such that we will be forced to hold by-elections," he said.
Another seven PR councillors had resigned in Makhado and six councillors in Thulamela.
Seven PR councillors had resigned in the Vhembe district municipality.
Netshifhefhe said the withdrawal of PR councillors did not affect the party because they had a reserve list to draw on.
He said the inauguration of the new PR councillors would have to be done in conjunction with the Independent Electoral Commission. The withdrawals did not affect their standing in the organisation.
"They were exercising an option given them by the organisation to either resign from their jobs or as councillors," he said.
There is widespread concern among politicians in Limpopo that it was "a risk to resign your job to earn less as a councillor".
"With the way ANC politics is these days, you cannot resign your job if you do not know what will happen in 2014. It is a dog eat dog situation," said a member, who refused to be named.
There were no withdrawals or resignations as councillors by ANC members in the Mutale and Musina municipalities.

Let them go, indeed. It is either you are a councilor willing to serve your community or you resign. We cannot afford to have a school teacher who is also serving as a councillor. When is he/she going to look after the needs of his/her community while spending much of his/her time in class? The school kids also want him/her.Report Abuse
