Police swore, kicked and punched me. They called me k****r

A PROMINENT Vereeniging lawyer suffered facial and body injuries when he was allegedly assaulted by three uniformed police officers outside his home on Friday night.

Thomas Mahlobogoane's face had to be given stitches after he was allegedly attacked by three police officers.

"My sin was to drive at night. I don't know why I was assaulted and am still asking myself what wrong I had done. To make matters worse, I was assaulted at a place where I thought I was safe - outside my yard," he said.

Mahlobogoane said he was assaulted by two policemen and a policewoman in Vereeniging.

The lawyer said he was driving home when he was stopped by a VW Golf marked with bright police stripes.

"They asked me why I was driving with the headlights switched off," he said. "I told them that they were wrong, my lights were switched on. One of them handcuffed me and then all hell broke loose.

"I was defenseless with my hands handcuffed from behind. They swore, kicked and punched me.

"They even called me a k****r," Mahlobogoane said.

A police van driven by two officers approached them.

Mahlobogoane said he thought the officers in the bakkie were going to rescue him.

"Instead they just looked at me and the three white officers told them everything was in order. They then drove off. The three then continued to assault me," Mahlobogoane said.

He said one of the policemen went to his car and searched it.

The policeman found his business cards in the car and realised that Mahlobogoane was a lawyer.

"He asked me if I was a lawyer. He then tried to apologise and said I should tell a doctor who would examine me that I fell on the ground.

"How can I fall and suffer the injures I have today?" he asked.

The lawyer said the officers went into his yard, returned with water and started washing his blood from the street.

"I am very angry. Imagine what could have happened had they not realised that I am a lawyer. I want justice and the three must be arrested," Mahlobogoane said.

He said he could easily identify his attackers.

Police spokesperson Constable Tebogo Lephoto said the matter was being investigated.

"We don't condone such attacks and it is against our policy as the police force. We are seriously dealing with the matter," Lephoto said.
