Bid to stem xeno violence

Jun 17, 2011 | Alex Matlala matlalaa@sowetan.co.za | 14 comments

MORE than 50 police officers have been dispatched to a settlement near Polokwane where residents allegedly attacked foreigners after accusing them of theft.

Officers from Seshego and Polokwane in Limpopo have been deployed to the volatile areas of extensions 71, 72, 75 and 76 in Seshego to guard against any further eruption of violence.

The areas were plagued by violence this week, including the killing of a Zimbabwean national who was stoned to death.

Six houses, believed to have been occupied by Zimbabweans, were also burnt down.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi yesterday said they had also been forced to make use of a police helicopter to monitor the situation, especially during the night since there was no electricity in the areas.

Mulaudzi said the areas would be monitored on a 24-hour basis.

"We have resolved to patrol the areas day and night after we realised that most of the attacks occurred during the night," Mulaudzi. said

"We have also pleaded with the Polokwane municipality to fast-track the electrification of the areas in an endeavour to curb this kind of crime from happening."

Violence broke out on Monday night after residents accused Zimbabwean nationals of illegally occupying RDP houses meant for locals and also of being responsible for a spate of criminal activities in the areas.

On Wednesday six RDP houses, allegedly occupied by foreigners, were set alight, while four others were pelted with stones.

Goods such as furniture, clothes and groceries were also destroyed.

Mulaudzi said about 15 Zimbabweans had been temporarily housed at the Seshego and Polokwane police stations "until the situation calmed down".

A 35-year-old man was arrested in connection with the attack.

Mulaudzi said the man would face charges of arson and public violence.

Tsaaa,

The responsibility lies with government and government's failure to protect it's citizens does not excuse the barbaric actions of the people shown in the video beating a defenseless man to death.

Xenophobia will always be there; the question is How do we minimise it? Also note that none of our african brothers can do crime without the assistance of locals. Let first organise ourself and assist our community in fighting crime without siding. What really hurt in our community is the fact we cover up for most of our brothers, husband, fathers etc.... criminals

I have always maintained that as long as the government does not address the root causes of these so-called xenophobic attacks, we will still see more.

I support xenophobia, because there is the reason for it. Zimbabweans, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Ethopias and Nigerians must be wiped out of South Africa. ANC is just a poverty marketing organisation
