'He was out to kill me'

DISTRAUGHT: Mbali Mathipa, whose boyfriend was arrested last night for the murder of her mother and a man he suspected was Mbali's lover

POLICE have cornered and arrested a man who yesterday murdered his lover's mother in Orange Farm, and then travelled to Soweto to kill a man he believed was his girlfriend's boyfriend.

The man's trail of blood started at about 6am when he shot dead Christina Montsoko Mathipa, 47, and later killed the man at about 1pm.

The distraught girlfriend, Mbali Mathipa, had earlier expressed fear that her boyfriend of seven years would come after her.

After hearing the news of his arrest late last night, Mathipa said: "I am relieved. I felt so unsafe while this man was on the loose. How I wish I could have seen him when they took him into custody. I did not know how I was going to sleep because he would have come back to kill me."

Captain Johannes Motsiri said police arrested the man in Tshiawelo, Soweto, three hours after committing the second murder. "We found him asleep at a family house in Tshiawelo," Motsiri said, adding that the man was a security guard.

Police also confiscated a firearm.

The boyfriend arrived at their home in Orange Farm Zone 7 with the intention of killing her and her mother in the early hours of yesterday morning.

When he did not find her, he shot her mother in front of their 5-year-old daughter. Mathipa, 25, escaped possible death because she had woken up early to go and seek a protection order against the man and to claim maintenance for their two children.

"I never thought he would do it. I thought it was just threats. Now he has killed my mother," she said.

The couple broke up last month, and they have two daughters, one who is a year old and another 5.

Mbali Mathipa's uncle, Elias Seabela, said: "I got a call from my niece, who told me to come quickly because my sister was dying."

While rushing to Christina's house the man called, saying he got her.

"He has been telling me for two years now that he would shoot her, but I didn't think he was serious.

"When he called me he said: 'Remember I told you I would kill your sister and your niece? Now I have shot your sister. Mbali was just lucky she wasn't home. And now am going to kill myself as well'."

The Ministry for Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities said the abuse and violence against women needed to stop.

"This is shocking, and as a ministry we are very concerned about this. We receive reports about this sort of thing everyday," Sibani Mngadi, spokesperson for the ministry, said.

Yes please this has to stop now, what are you doing about it though? we have been hearing how it has to stop forever now but more and more women on daily basis still suffer at the hands of those they thought will protect them.

Its sad cause this could've been avoided this psycho has been singing the same song that he would kill them for 2yrs now well he did i wonder why he killed the mother though and i bet no on took the girlfriends story serious its sad really

Women are the only oppressed group in our society that lives in intimate association with their opressors
