Pupils held in booze raid

Police nab 40 pupils partying during school hours

GAUTENG police on Friday arrested 40 pupils found partying during school hours in Soweto and Roodepoort.

At the house in Dobsonville, police found used condoms, sealed and empty bottles of whiskey, vodka, brandy and ciders.

Most of the pupils were aged between 14 and 16.

Department of Community Safety spokesperson Thapelo Moiloa said: "Twenty-five highly intoxicated learners were found at the house. There were used condoms all over the place. It shows that they were really enjoying themselves."

Moiloa said police followed two packed taxis that were parked outside Princess High School in Roodepoort when they were conducting their raids at "problematic schools" on the West Rand.

"In the Roodepoort house, 15 pupils were found with liquor. They were also intoxicated."

He said a pupil from Princess High was found in possession of a syringe containing benzine.

The raids also netted a 19-year-old boy found in possession of 12g of the CAT drug. His father told police to lock him up for the weekend.

Another teenager was arrested outside Adelaan High School for possession of live ammunition.

"At Tulip High School, a pupil was found in possession of dagga. At Roodepoort High School, police found a knife and an oka pipe ," Moiloa said.

He said the pupils were released into their parents' custody.

The teenagers found with CAT and ammunition are expected to appear in the Roodepoort magistrate's court today.
