DJ Tira bust for speeding

FAMOUS and multi-award winning DJ Tira was arrested at the weekend

The famous Durban-based musician and producer was stopped allegedly driving at 170km/h on the N1 North Highway in the Midrand area yesterday.

Tira was arrested after he had left the South African Music Awards ceremony at Montecasino in Fourways on Saturday night.

Sowetan has learnt that the producer was driving a silver BMW when he was arrested.

During his arrest by the Johannesburg Metro Police officers, Tira, whose real name is Mthokozi Khathi, was alone in the vehicle.

He allegedly told the officers that he was rushing to perform at a party in Pretoria.

He did not spend time in the Midrand Police Station where he was released on bail.

Tira, who owns Afrotainment, has produced songs for famous multi-award winning kwaito groups Big Nuz, Tzozo and Professor, Fisherman, L'vovo and DJ Cindo.

Tira is counted among the country's best house and kwaito music producers.

When approached for comment, his manager, Nkule Mthembu, said he was not aware of the musician's arrest.

"I don't know if he was arrested. It is the first time that I hear about this from you (Sowetan)," said Mthembu.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela confirmed that Tira was arrested and released on R500 bail.

Maphakela said Tira was expected to appear in court on Thursday.

Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said they arrested 14 offenders in that vicinity.

Two of the motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor, while others drove above the speed limit of 120km/h.

"The fastest motorist arrested was driving at 188km/h in a black Mercedes- Benz," said Minnaar.

The motorists were all released on bail and are expected to appear in the Randburg magistrates' court later this week.
