'The poor are neglected'

POLITICAL parties are not doing enough to make sure that the poor have enough water, food or healthcare, says the Black Sash in a review of the parties' policies

The poor use less than 2 percent of the country's water but face "disproportionate restrictions" of their water because they do not have the money to pay for it, the report also found.

"Water cut-offs and drip systems have dire consequences for the health and quality of life of our people ..." says the report.

The Black Sash conducted the survey on the ANC, DA, ACDP, IFP and UDM. It said that it could not get any information from Cope.

"The manifestos of the political parties have done little to explain how they plan to use the R800billion set aside in the February budget for infrastructure development over the next three years," the report added.

Their previous research in the provinces found a dire lack of clinics and staff, shortages of medication, high travel costs for poor people needing to get to the clinic, and that health staff verbally abused patients.
