Police separate ANC and IFP youth
ARMED police formed a human wall to prevent clashes between IFP and ANC members attending the Ulundi municipality's integrated development plan road show wearing their party colours yesterday.
Confrontation started just after the arrival of IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who was the guest speaker at the municipality's community report back session.
Tension rose high when ANC members raised a flag bearing President Jacob Zuma's face.
Annoyed IFP supporters started hurling insults at the ANC group led by their local leader Makhosonke Msibi.
The event turned into a political campaign until the local leadership calmed the situation.
Msibi, who moved forward with the ANC group, was asked to take a seat to allow government proceedings to continue. Programme director Nkosenye Zulu urged both parties' members to behave themselves because the gathering was a government event.
"We must be reminded that this gathering is not for any political party but the municipality. Let's be tolerant of each other and continue to behave," Zulu said.
"When someone sitting next to you is wearing a different T-shirt to yours it's not a problem. We must allow government work."
Police commanders sat quietly while local municipality mayor Mvuseni Luthuli continued with his address.
It was the second stand-off between ANC and IFP members this week. The IFP group blocked the ANC Youth League's bid to campaign near Buthelezi's homestead, kwaPhindangene, at Nkonjeni near Ulundi at the weekend. The youth league convoy was stopped before reaching its destination.
Tensions remain high between the National Freedom Party, IFP and ANC as the area becomes a battleground for the three political parties in local elections.
