Bosses on rape charge go to court

TWO factory owners accused of raping four young men are expected to appear in Cape Town's Blue Down's magistrate's court today.

The two men, who may not be named until they have pleaded, were arrested on Tuesday on charges of assault, indecent assault, crimen injuria and intimidation after allegedly raping four young men who had been doing a day's work at their factory.

They are expected to apply for bail today.

South African Communist Party district secretary Benson Ngqentsu said the community and his party would march on the court this morning to demand that the men be held without bail.

Sowetan reported yesterday that the four victims had worked from 7am to 11pm at the factory before the two alleged perpetrators beat them up, forced them at gunpoint to suck their private parts, and then held their heads in toilet bowls filled with a mixture of urine and water.

Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven, pictured, yesterday described the attack as "appalling".

"Cosatu supports the SACP's demand for a full investigation into the case and disciplinary action against those police officers who did not attend to the case when it was first reported.

"Workers get not too much, but too little protection from our laws, which are blatantly flouted by employers like these," Craven added.

He said if the accused were found guilty, Cosatu would demand "the harshest possible sentence".
