Honest woman returns R11500

Apr 12, 2011 | Alfred Moselakgomo | 104 comments

A PRETORIA woman nearly lost over R11000 after a bank gave her and another person the same account number.

Martha Moeng from Hammanskraal opened an account a tFNB in January. Last week, R11500 was deposited into her account.

"I got worried when the money I was expecting for the services rendered did not reflect in my account a day after the payment was made, and I immediately contacted the bank wanting to know why," Moeng said.

"But the bank dismissed me, saying it was not their policy to reveal details of its clients to third parties. It was horrible and there was a time when I felt I had lost the money. Even at the Rosebank branch the workers refused to help me or at least give me the contact details of the person into whose account my money went."

Moeng then contacted the Pretoria branch. They checked the account and realised that she shared it with Mpho Nkuna, who also opened her account at the Hammanskraal branch - in March.

After realising the two women shared an account number "by mistake", the bank called Nkuna who agreed to refund Moeng.

Nkuna said: "I was shocked when I got an SMS saying that R11500 was deposited into my account. I knew that it was not my money and as a Christian, I could not spend it."

Moeng and Nkuna have since been allocated new account numbers.

FNB spokesperson Steve Shiggins said: "We are trying to establish why this big mistake happened."
