Lotto winner donates R1m to charity

An entrepreneur who won a R22,4 million jackpot is donating R1 million of his winnings to a community in the Eastern Cape

“I am so thankful for this. If I can give to people, especially people of my community, I will be the happiest person,” said the 57-year-old father of six, who benefited from a charity when he was  a child.

The man, who wanted to remain anonymous, spent R35 on his winning Powerball ticket.

He said he had fulfilled most of his dreams and would now like to travel the world.

On top of that, he said he wanted to gradually “rope in” his children to run the  business and secure them a “bright future”.

“I am happy with all that I have achieved so far, I just want to  retire and enjoy life,” the man said.

National lottery operator Gidani’s spokeswoman Thembi Tulwana said the man was eager for the money to reach the beneficiaries as soon as possible.

“He has already set aside the money for this purpose and has identified disadvantaged schools among the causes he wants to assist,” she said.
