"It is alleged that a suspect ordered the 42-year-old mother (of the victim) to cover her face with a blanket, to which she complied.

"He then ordered the 18-year-old victim to lie on the floor and raped her while her two-year-old sons watched," said Warrant Officer Joey Jeevan.

The incident happened on Saturday night in a place called France Phase 5 in Pietermaritzburg.

Jeevan said the 18-year-old woman and her mother were asleep when they were awoken by a man who produced a firearm.

The man demanded money from the family - which they did not have.

"The man ransacked the house and took four mobile phones before fleeing the scene.

"The woman and her mother were afraid that the suspect could still be in the area and locked themselves in their house.

"They remained inside until morning when they contacted police.

"The victim was taken to a clinic in the Northdale area for treatment," Jeevan said.

It is believed the suspect gained entry by forcing open a window.

No arrests have been made.
