MORE than 600000 people visited voting stations on the first day of the final voter registration weekend, the Independent Electoral Commission said in Pretoria yesterday.
Deputy chief electoral officer Mosotho Moepya said people visited the stations to either register as new voters, re-register if they had changed addresses or to inspect their details on the voters' roll.
Moepya said this was a 50percent improvement in comparison to the last registration weekend held at the beginning of February.
He said the last day of the registration weekend was going well with no disruptions . "Out of the 20864 voting stations countrywide, only 12 stations could not open mainly because of flooding," he said.
"Because this is the final registration weekend, the IEC is looking at alternative registrations in these affected areas before Thursday. The 12 stations include two in Limpopo, five in Free State and five in Northern Cape."
He said the IEC website had recorded a total of 39117 hits on Saturday, while the SMS facility received 58983 messages and the call centre received more than 12800 calls from the public enquiring about their registration status.
"Our young voters are encouraged to follow registration and election developments on our newly created mobile site on mobi.elections.org.za or on twitter on www.twitter/ iecloveyoursa. The IEC appeals to political parties to assist in ensuring that voters register or re-register in the voting district where they live.
The commission continues to provide facilities for voters to verify and check their details on its website and toll-free number as well as SMS." He said until the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs has proclaimed a date for the election, eligible voters are advised to continue to register or check their registration details at municipal electoral offices during office hours.
They can also SMS their ID number to 32810, contact the call centre toll- free on 0800-11-8000 or visit the IEC website, www.elections.org.za, to check their registration details.
