Yvonne stands by Bono

LIKE a thief in the night, Yvonne Chaka Chaka jetted into Cape Town for her guest performance on Bono's show.

The hush-hush appearance took her thrilled fans by surprise at the Green Point Stadium on Friday night, where the popular duo sang I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For and Stand By Me.

Cracking up, Chaka Chaka said: "I'm sure Bono has not found what he's looking for, that is why he asked me to stand by him.

"The response of the crowd was amazing," Chaka Chaka said. "The whole crowd just erupted into a frenzy of excitement that took me by surprise.

"I was even more shaken to learn that our performance had made it to most of the international wires.

"It was a great honour to be invited by a renowned and respected artist like Bono. I was truly humbled because I thought he was just going to invite me as a guest to the show."

This is not the first time that the two have been on stage together. When Chaka Chaka performed at Madiba's 85th birthday at the Sandton Convention Centre in 2001, Bono jumped on stage and did his best to sing Umqombothi with her.

"Bono and I work for the UN. We were together in Japan and in France, where he invited me to his show.

"He speaks about the rights of Africans, Aids, malaria and TB. He's even opened offices in Johannesburg and other parts of Africa. This is to have people on the ground who know what is happening in those countries."

Chaka Chaka described Bono as a heavyweight, a stunning rockstar and great humanitarian.

"I was so impressed with the treatment I got," she said. "My dressing room was beautiful. The stage was amazing. I was so happy to see it was still the same stage, same classy show like the one he invited me to in New York in 2008."
