'Childish' DA blacklists our reporter

THE Democratic Alliance has blacklisted Sowetan's Cape political correspondent Anna Majavu, whom they accuse of having a political agenda because of her previous work.

Cape-Town-based Majavu, who is a former spokesperson for the SA Municipal Workers Union, was blacklisted in August last year.

Executive director of communications and research Ross van der Linde confirmed that the party had cut communication with Majavu.

"Majavu is not a journalist. Some journalists and editors disagree with our policies and views, and they are entitled to do so. But Anna Majavu is a former South African Municipal Workers Union spin doctor, who has a particular political agenda," Van der Linde said.

He said the DA was not obliged to send information to any individual or organisation.

Majavu has rejected the DA's assertion, saying she is a professional. She said her woes started when she wrote a story about how DA MP Pieter van Dalen shot at two children in Khayelitsha.

Majavu based her story on a report by Advocate Pierre van Tonder, who adjudicated in the matter of an appeal by a Metro police officer who was dismissed.

The officer, with Van Dalen, shot rubber bullets at two children playing soccer in Khayelitsha late at night.

Van Dalen - who was a councillor at the time of the incident - accompanied Metro police officers during the xenophobic attacks in 2008.

The DA lodged a complaint with the press ombudsman about the story. Among other things, the party objected to the reference to "black" children in the story. In its defence Sowetan argued that it was common knowledge that Khayelitsha was not a racially integrated area - so it would be reasonable to conclude that the children were black. The ombudsman dismissed the DA's objection.

"The DA took me off their press list the same day they filed a complaint with the press ombudsman, and not because of my previous job," Majavu said.

"It is unfortunate that the DA chose to go this route. History shows that the exclusion of journalists is used as a form of censorship against those who do not mollycoddle their subjects. It is no different from Julius Malema kicking out a journalist from a press conference", Sowetan acting editor Thabo Leshilo said.

Rhodes University's Jane Duncan said the DA's refusal to send her information was childish.

"Majavu's previous work is irrelevant. Many journalists have been involved in other professions in their working lives. This does not make them lesser journalists, otherwise one would need to be a journalist from the cradle to the grave to qualify in the DA's eyes, which is unrealistic."

You mogoe, you're busy prancing around like a princess with a tantrum.
Jounarlists are supposed to report news that's all. Whether favourable to your party or not.
You surprise me, cause the DA wants to appear as defenders of a free press, where as they are blacklisting journalists.
I'm sorry I'd rather have Malema throwing out a disrespectful journalist whom he invited and allowed to come onto his 'Revolutionary House' even when he knew that the journo was a 'bloody agent'.
Juju still let him in! LOL.

Who's looking better now?

this comes as no surprise, we have always known that DA is a party for white people and the illusioned blacks, they use the same tactics that the apartheit gvt used. give blacks just enough to shut em up and let the white people have errthing else. the toilet saga was not handled in their normal detailed fashion that they use to 'expose' ANC... the printed media is openly critical of ANC and favours DA, from the showing of ridiculous photos of ANC members as opposed to respectable and decent photos of members from other parties to making sure that when ANC 'corruption' is exposed the story gets front page coverage.

the ANC is definitely going the wrong direction, but with no option for a black man, ANC will always be my choice, i will be damned if i put the white man back in power after what the did to our parents and are continuing to do to us even today. and as for the notion that the masses that support ANC are the uneducated blacks... they need to wake up to realize that even with my degrees when i continue to be sidelined at work, not becuase of my incompetence but becuase of my skin, i will never ever vote a white man into power.

Eh, sorry for you, but this 'reporter' was writing false articles.
The ombudsman found her articles were not factual, and ordered her to apologise.
She didnt of course.

She should be stripped of the title 'journalist', as writing lies and making up your own stories goes against the ethics of journalism.

FIRSTLY: You are a blatant little racist that should get out of OUR beautiful country. Racist people are like bad apples and should be thrown out with the garbage. I have all the reason in the world to be a racist, but I know better, and I am making a difference in our wonderful country.
SECONDLY: This whole DA business of banning the reporter seems like such a paradox. If the press ombudsman made a ruling, so be it, but hey DA, stand by what you preach .... remember something called freedom of the press???

I am not a voter for either party, and my party has ended up joining the DA, so who do I vote for now? The DA just made sure that I will not vote for them. I guess Reverent Meshoe will be next up. I will not choose which is the lesser of two evils between the ANC and the DA.

Okay seriously.. This is supposed to be an objective news report???

"Among other things" - Like what other things???

So they objected to the race being reported, most news reports don't mention race when crimes are committed (and why should they, race doesn't have anything to do with it).

Quote "she wrote a story about how DA MP Pieter van Dalen shot at two children in Khayelitsha." while accompaning the police during the Xenophobic attacks??? Was he charged? As a civilian i.e. not a police officer and he's shooting at ANYONE, why wasn't he prosecuted?

Seriously, two kids were playing soccer while the police are out controlling Xenophobic attacks? Makes 100% sense to me. Lets play some kick ball while people and the police are out on the rampage....

we live in a country where a person's race is always highlighted and can thus never be ignored, u wanna live in your little bubble in this beautiful/wonderful country of YOUR as u repeatedly claim, go ahead. dont ask me to join u though; a simple obervation of trends and patterns speaks to that fact. and what difference are u making in this country by not being racist? u have made the decision that i am racist from reading a paragraph that i wrote, surely i have to be if YOU say that i am, right!?

seeing that YOUR party (ID) joined DA, i can only assume that u are coloured, and this not because i am racist, but becuase ID had more than 90% of its support from coloured people. this is called an intelligent guess, not racism.

@L_M, by white man, i didnt mean a male, meant white people, in DA case being a white WOman, happy now?
