A SON is among those arrested after his mother was ritually murdered at Mahonisi village outside Malamulele in Limpopo

" This is the second muthi murder in the area in two weeks"

Tsatsawani Maria Maceke, 74, was discovered by her granddaughter in a pool of blood yesterday morning at her RDP house.

Her private parts were removed, as well as her breasts, lips and eyes.

This is the second muthi murder in the area in two weeks.

A crack team of police officers, including provincial commissioner General Amon Mashekgo, were the first on the scene.

"We are going to leave no stone unturned and we are going to make sure that such brutality and satanic acts by our people come to an end," Mashekgo said.

He said the police had launched a task team in the Malamulele area to find out what causes such killings and to arrest the perpetrators.

Provincial police spokesman Colonel Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed that two people aged 35 and 36 had been arrested. He appealed to the community for information.

Maceke's daughter, Joyce, alleged that her mother had been repeatedly raped by her son in the past. The family had reported the rapes to the police but he was not arrested.

"We went to the social worker to report the matter but nothing happened up until she died," she said.

She said her mother lived alone in the RDP house because her brother did not allow Joyce to look after her.

  • Meanwhile, the community of Mavambe last week gave Nathi Mthethwa, the Police Minister, 14 days to compel the police to arrest a prime suspect in the muthi murders that occurred in the area since 2008.

Angry residents from villages in Mavambe and Dovheni marched to the Malamulele police station demanding Mthethwa's intervention.

George Phadagi, MEC for safety and security in Limpopo, has put up a R10,000 reward for information from the community.
