KZN police fight to stop mob justice

KWAZULU-NATAL police say they will not rest until they ensure that that communities refrain from resorting to mob justice.

People in various parts of the province have been dealing with suspects violently, including torching the houses of those suspected of being involved in witchcraft.

Police arrested 32 Dundee residents including eight juveniles for public violence after they attacked a family house in France area in northern KwaZulu-Natal, accusing its owners of killing people and mutilating them.

Police were called in to calm the situation but the community stoned police vehicles. Four police vehicles were stoned and three officers injured.

The group baying for the blood of a man known as "Skebhe" accused him of harvesting body parts.

Police used rubber bullets in an attempt to disperse the crowd.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Vincent Mdunge said police arrested 32 people including eight juveniles for public violence.

He said a group of people had attacked a house in France area and tried to kill a man they accused of killing people in the area.

"They wanted to kill him but he was not in the house at that time.

"The group started throwing stones at the house and damaged it," Mdunge said.
