School head gets 18 years for raping pupil

DEPARTMENT of education MEC Senzo Mchunu has issued a stern warning to teachers who rape, abuse and ill-treat pupils.

This comes after a 54-year-old Georgedale Primary School principal, Nhlanhla Victor Mbongwe, was on Wednesday sentenced to 18 years in jail by the Camperdown magistrate's court for raping a pupil in 2009.

The pupil was a victim of a "silly game" between her teachers and the principal.

They competed among themselves to be the first to sleep with her.

Mchunu said Mbongwe destroyed the life and promising future of a young girl and should be punished for it. He urged parents, pupils and community members to come forward and report such cases.

"Never allow yourself to be persuaded to drop charges if your child has been molested, raped or harassed by anyone. It is wrong and we must fight it at all cost," he said.

On the day of the incident, some pupils had gone on a school excursion. The principal called the pupil to his office and raped her. Not knowing what to do after the ordeal, the girl wrote a letter and left it in her room where her aunt would find and read it.

Her aunt, on discovering the letter, went to the police and opened a case of rape.

Police believe that this was not the first time that the principal had raped a pupil at the school.

It was also established that he had impregnated another pupil and had allegedly paid a certain boy at the school to take the blame.
