2 provinces lose millions for housing

Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale has taken away R463 million from Free State and KwaZulu-Natal because they have failed to deliver on their own targets

The funding has been moved to Limpopo and Northern Cape which met their delivery targets and can build more housing.

Free State will lose R263 million and KwaZulu-Natal R200 million.

The Northern Cape will get R182 million for the construction of 2,070 new houses and upgrading 350 units in informal settlements.

Limpopo will get R131 million for the construction of 5,300 houses in 17 districts as part of the province's rural housing programme.

The remaining R150 million has been allocated to the national rectification programme to repair badly built houses in various provinces.

"Two provinces earlier in the group of four under-performers - Western Cape and Eastern Cape - remain on my watch-list and their performance will be closely monitored," Sexwale said.

"It is important to note that the R463million will be used to contribute directly to the housing backlog and the needs of the poor - rather than being rolled-over and/or returned to National Treasury."

Sexwale's spokesperson Chris Vick said since October the minister had unsuccessfully tried to get the concerned provinces to meet targets .

"Remember that as much as there is a backlog in KwaZulu-Natal and Free State there is similarly a need in Limpopo and Northern Cape. They are able to use the money now."
