Military-trained medical doctor and female companion are on the run after shooting at cops

Police were searching on Mondayl for a French couple involved in a shooting incident in which a South African police officer was killed and another wounded.

Northern Cape police spokesman Colonel Hendrik Swart said the search for the two was focused in the vicinity of Sutherland.

They were looking for Philippe Pierre Meniere, 60, a qualified medical doctor who underwent some military training in France.

He was seen wearing glasses, a brown SA National Defence Force pants and a shirt and Hi-Tec boots. He is about 1.82 metres tall and thinly built. He speaks English with a strong French accent.

The woman is Agnes Jeanne Jardel, 55, about 1.70 metres tall and  thinly built. She has long grey hair and was also dressed in brown army pants and wearing Hi-Tec boots.

Both of them have South African citizenship but are of French origin.

Swart said the couple was armed and dangerous and it was believed that they had various firearms in their possession.

These included a 12-bore shotgun, a .223 rifle, a .357 pistol, two 9 mm pistols and a .22 pistol.

Swart said about 50 police officers were searching in the Sutherland area.

All information provided to the police in  Sutherland was being followed up and checked.

The community was requested to keep on forwarding any information to the police in order to assist. Swart urged the public not to confront the suspects if found but to contact their nearest police station instead.

The Sutherland police station contact number is (023) 571-8040.

The French couple was on the run after shooting at police and the owner of the farm on which they stayed on Friday.

The farmer asked police to help evict the couple form a house on  the farm, because the couple was apparently also in possession of various illegal firearms.

The eviction turned into a shooting in which a police officer was killed and one wounded in the back.

The Cape Times reported on Monday that the wounded police officer, Warrant Officer Glenwall du Toit, 42, was treated in the intensive care unit at the N1 City Hospital.

Glenwall told the newspaper he was lucky to be alive.

“After he shot me in the back, he kept firing at the tyres of our cars. I lay on the ground, afraid I was going to die,” Du Toit was quoted in the report.

The report said that when the officers went to the farm on Friday they were accompanied by the farmer Gerhardus du Plessis and  his two sons, Cobus and Jaen.

Du Toit said they arrived and found the firearms without any problem but when they were loading the guns into a police vehicle shots were fired.

It was reported that the policeman killed was student-constable Jacob Boleme, 27, of Soutpan in the Free State.

Do you have photographs of this couple? It would really help if people could identify them. The couple are said to be 'survivalists' who belong to some kind of END-OF-THE WORLD cult which believes the world is coming to an end in 2012. I think anyone who shoots to kill police officers deserves the same treatment meted out to them.

@Africanist,Midodo - Oh so now its suddenly a issue? But blacks go to Europe ,rape and assault people and then you say nothing! The thing is just..You are a bunch of racist hypocrites! What about "weenie" mandela who acts like a real monkey and thinks she is above the law? or your lovely president who still needs to answer to corruption charges? It doesnt matter what color your skin is, if you commit crime your place is jail..

So these are not huge french people. They must be brought to book, and fast.
@charlieeco1, wtf, ntate? You an apologist for these monkeys? Their colour has nothing to do with their crime as much as Shrien's colour doesn't. Don't drag other people into this as well as the big R.C.[race card]
