Sim cards stolen from Johannesburg traffic lights

Cases of theft and vandalism have been opened at various police stations after The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) suspected that a syndicate is stealing Sim cards from the traffic lights, and using them to make phone calls.

The robberies are believed to be "systematic" and "coordinated" according to the JRA spokesperson Thulani Makhubela, the Mail & Guardian Online reports.

"They know which signals to target. They clearly have information," he said.

More than 400 of the city's 600 hi-tech traffic lights — which use a Sim card, modem and GPS system to send and receive information — have been damaged.

Repairing all 400 traffic lights due to theft and vandalism, would cost about R8,8m.

Makhubela said there were traffic lights damaged last year and had been fixed, only to be damaged again. "It’s like someone has a vendetta against the JRA. They were vandalised again with such vengeance."
