Poor whites apply for RDP houses

TWENTY-FIVE white families have registered for government housing in Mogale City, the municipality said yesterday.

"They still need to be assessed for subsidies, and if approved they will be allocated houses," spokesperson Nkosana Zali said.

He said the white families have registered on the housing demand management database and were to receive houses with the rest of communities. "The fact is that they are from the poor white communities of West Krugersdorp. They were not part of the group which had illegally occupied Coronation Park.

"We will continue to house all deserving communities of our city without prejudice because our country belongs to all who live in it, black and white. We will not prioritise one community over another on the basis of race, religion or any other criterion, but based on needs," he said.

There have been allegations that the municipality intends to allocate RDP houses in Kagiso to whites occupying Coronation Park, overlooking blacks who had been on the waiting list since 1995.

Zali said the Coronation Park matter has been taken to court.
