THE KwaZulu-Natal health department yesterday handed 10 infrastructure development projects to the Ugu district municipality to the tune of R32million.
The projects are intended to increase access to primary healthcare and to reach the HIV counselling and testing targets of 205000 people by June 2011.
The handover ceremony was held at the Murchinson Gateway clinic.
The 10 clinics were identified for the upgrade "through assessments based on catchment population, burden of disease and space requirements".
The sizeable donation was made by BroadReach healthcare (SA healthcare company) in partnership with USAid.
KwaZulu-Natal health MEC Sibongiseni Dlomo said: "The problem of access affects all health services and not just HIV.
"What BroadReach and USAid have done speaks directly to primary healthcare - people getting what they need when they need it."
Ugi district health manager Veeran Chetty said one of the major barriers in achieving the HIV targets is the lack of space.
"Through this clinic infrastructure revitalisation programme, we are hoping to achieve our various targets in combating the fight against HIV and Aids."
Gamalakhe township resident Busisiwe Gumede said she was very excited about the e projects and they would bring change to the community.
