Great 80th birthday present
A 79-YEAR-OLD woman has moved into a newly built RDP house in Alexandra a week ahead of her birthday.
Lugirl Mamabolo had been living in a rented one-room dwelling with seven other family members, including her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
On Tuesday she praised Gauteng MEC for local government and housing Kgaogelo Lekgoro when he visited the K206 RDP housing project in extension 9 to mark UN World Habitat Day.
"It was a beautiful birthday present. I was and I am overjoyed, really thankful and proud of our government," Mamabolo said.
"I have been living in hardship for a long time. I arrived in Alexandra about 50 years ago."
Mamabolo initially seemed stunned but burst into a broad smile when the house keys were handed to her.
"Words will never fully explain the joy we are feeling right now. We lived in a shack for about 20 years," she said.
"We struggled with rainwater that would flood our home."
Disabled couple Shimane Mogoane and Sarah Mamabolo also thanked the government after they moved into their new house yesterday.
More than 1600 households are expected to benefit from the project, which is part of the Alexandra Renewal Project. It won the UN Scroll of Honour Award last year in the US.
Government officials said Alexandra has seen more than 14000 housing units built under the project.
Lekgoro said: "It is not correct to say the government is losing the housing war in Alexandra. Look around and you will see that it is not the same old Alex."
He said the government had invested about R2billion in infrastructure, houses and other amenities in the area.
"We have always told our people that housing is a long-term issue that needs a large budget and we ask for patience."

the MEC must not be bold and say Alexandra people are benefiting. The old woman may be an Alexandrian but if a reseach can be done there, you will find that the actual Alex people are not benefiing enough. The people that are benefiting are actually people that are in the area on work purposes and for these reasons i doubt we will ever see development. It is very futal to extend Alex while in the inside there is no change at all.its hurts the people of ALEX.Report Abuse
