'You can't bust me, I was the premier's wife'
FUNI Sininda, the former wife of Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza, was arrested for reckless driving in the tourist town of Hazyview yesterday.
A source told Sowetan that Sininda was driving at 140km/h in a 60km zone in Hazyview at about 5pm when traffic cops manning a speed camera stopped her.
Silinda allegedly told traffic officers that they "could not arrest" her because she was Mabuza's former wife.
Hazyview police spokesperson Warrant officer Mpho Koli confirmed the incident and said Silinda was released on her own cognisance.
Koli said she was ordered to appear before the Hazyview periodical court on September 16 - to face reckless driving charges.
He declined to confirm that Silinda allegedly told traffic officers that they could not arrest her because she was a former wife of the premier.
Mabuza distanced himself from the whole event, saying it served no purpose in dragging him into the matter.
Mpumalamga provincial police spokesperson Captain Leonard Hlati said no one was above the law. "It doesn't matter who you are. If you break the law the police will act on it."
