Pupils to go on holidays

Sep 10, 2010 | Tebogo Monama | 23 comments

THE September school holidays will only be cancelled by schools that feel they have not completed the syllabus, Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga says.

"We have decided that it is not necessary for the holidays to be cancelled at all schools. There are schools that have been functioning well during the strike," Motshekga told Sowetan yesterday.

"The intensive revision will be more focused on matric learners. With the other grades it will go school by school. We will intensify our Saturday classes and extend the schooling day.

"Our aim is to have clusters for matrics where they can have revision with master teachers. In areas where we cannot have clusters revision will be done per school."

The minister said she was confident teachers were committed to the recovery plan.

On Monday unions suspended the three-week public service strike to reopen talks with the government.

Schools are now under pressure to catch up on lost time since there are less than 50 days before matriculants sit for their final exams.

"Most of the logistics will be handled by the provinces. We will use our budget for the recovery plan but we have urgently alerted Treasury that if we need extra money and might ask them for it," Motshekga said.

The KwaZulu-Natal education department this week said they were looking into cancelling preliminary examinations.

The exams account for 25 percent of pupils' final marks.

Fabulosity

Ya, I really feel sorry for this year's matriculants and pupils in general. Imagine being faced with this dilemma and having to catch up after all this. Money does destroy people's lives. Good luck to all of them.

I think for the primary schools it won't have the bad impact but for the high schools they must go it doesn't matter if those schools are doing well all high schools they must attend.

I dont buy the argument that the Recovery Plan should be aimed at Grade 12 learners only. You should know that the education of young people is of primary importance hence the term "Primary school". In South Africa we are concerned with the roofing of the house. We give a damn at the foundation. This Recovery Plan must also be enforced in primary schools so that our foundation should be solid.A learner who can hardly read in primary will obviously fail to make the grade in Grade 12.What do we do in South Africa? We wait for him to be in Grade 12 before we give him the attention he deserves
