Man (67) accused of abusing boy
RESIDENTS of the impoverished rural village of Donnybrook in southern KwaZulu-Natal are baying for the blood of a man accused of indecently assaulting his neighbour's son.
It is alleged that the 67-year-old man from Kwanomandlovu ordered the boy to spend the night at his house. The man allegedly raped the boy the whole night and paid him R100 to "keep quiet".
The incident has angered the clan community, who have since demanded that the police free him so that they can "deal" with him.
A disgruntled elder in the village, who asked not to be named, told Sowetan that they suspect it was not the first time the man had indecently assaulted the boy.
"It is clear that this man has been taking advantage of young boys and the police must release him so that we can teach him a lesson. We did not know this man was so evil and he must go or face the community's anger," he said.
Villagers said they would be relieved if the police released the man.
"They cannot keep him in the cells while the boy is in pain. They must bring him back to us and we will deal with him because he is an embarrassment to the clan."
Police spokesperson Jay Naicker confirmed the incident. He said the police arrested the man on Wednesday.
"The boy did not spend a night at his parents' house on Sunday. And he could not tell his parents about what had happened to him until Wednesday," he said.
"It appears the youngster went to the man's homestead to be paid after he had helped him with something. The man allegedly assaulted him instead.
"The boy told his parents, who informed the police. The suspect was arrested and is expected to appear in the local magistrate's court on Friday (today)."
Local councillor Hlabekisa Dlamini expressed shock at the incident. He said it was the first time he had heard of such a horrific deed involving a boy in the area.
"We will engage the community on the issue and calm them down to allow the law to take its course," Dlamini said. "We will meet the boy's family just to find out what exactly happened."
He urged the community not to take the law into their own hands.
"Vigilantism is not the solution and since the police have arrested the suspect we need to wait for him to appear in court and for justice to take its course."
