Teacher held for boys' rape
A teacher in Piet Retief, Mpumalanga, has been arrested for allegedly raping young boys in the area.
The 26-year-old teacher at Nqobile Combined School in Ethandukukhanya township was arrested on Monday.
He appeared in the Piet Retief magistrate's court yesterday on two counts of rape.
His case was postponed to September 16 for further investigation and to allow him to get a lawyer.
The man, who stays with his brother, has so far been charged with the rape of only two local boys aged 9 years and 10 years.
The 10-year-old was allegedly raped in May last year while the other was abused late last month.
The incidents occurred at the alleged perpetrator's home in the evening when his brother was away at work.
Captain Magonseni Nkosi of Piet Retief police confirmed the arrest and the teacher's appearance in the Piet Retief magistrate's court.
Nkosi said though the abuse started last year, it was only "uncovered recently" by the 9-year-old victim's mother.
He said the boy had started behaving strangely both at home and in class.
"He even soiled himself," Nkosi said.
The victim revealed his ordeal when his mother questioned him at the weekend, while the 10-year-old victim's mother only reported the matter during the police visit to the 9-year-old boy's home on Sunday.
The boys, who are next-door neighbours, do not attend the school where the alleged perpetrator is a teacher.
Nkosi has appealed to other possible victims and their parents to report to the Piet Retief police station.
