Police officers hijacked

Sep 8, 2010 | Sapa | 24 comments

TWO police officers were hijacked at gunpoint by a group of men suspected of robbing a cash-in-transit van in Khuma location near Stilfontein, North West police said.

Either you draw a gun first or you are dead ... these people will kill you

The suspects pulled a gun out on the police, who were forced to take cover, said spokesperson Lesego Metsi.

"Either you draw (a gun) first or you are dead ... these people will kill you," he said.

The suspects drove the car for about 2km down the road where they abandoned it and fled into the township.

A 34-year-old man was arrested that evening in the location for his alleged involvement in the heist, Metsi said.

A police search of the suspect's house turned up two cash containers that were taken during the heist, as well as a firearm that was allegedly used during the attack.

The cash containers were empty when police found them, Metsi said.

On Monday, about six men cornered a cash-in-transit van at the Engen garage in Khuma, robbed it of two containers with an undisclosed amount of money and took one of the security guards' firearms.

The arrested suspect was expected to appear in court today, Metsi said.

Police are searching for about four or five suspects who are still on the run.
