ZCC guards abused me again - lawyer
MPHAFOLANE Koma, a lawyer who was chained at the Zion Christian Church headquarters after a squabble with security personnel in 2008, got into trouble with the same church's guards again this past weekend.
This time the attorney claims guards at the church in Moria, Boyne, manhandled him and damaged his BMW X5 because he was a "troublemaker".
"I was minding my own business when 12 security personnel approached me and accused me of being troublesome," he said.
"When I asked what they were talking about, they said I was going to pay for having put the church in a bad light when I exposed their bad treatment two years ago."
In 2008 Koma publicly accused ZCC security personnel of ill-treating congregants after he was allegedly made to inhale "strong smoke" made of coffee after an argument with church guards.
"Two of my friends were detained by these guards," Koma said.
"When I wanted to know what they had done the guards manhandled me and locked me up in a tiny shack near Kgorong before putting coffee on four red-hot rocks to cause heavy smoke.
"I tried to tell them that the people they had detained were my friends but they refused to listen and made me sit in that strong smoke for about 30 minutes."
Koma said he later laid complaints against the church with the Human Rights Commission.
He withdrew the charges following an intervention by church leader Barnabas Lekganyane.
"After Lekganyane's intervention I thought the chapter was closed and that we could all move on, but clearly I was wrong," Koma said.
He said on Sunday evening, when he was about to leave Moria after the church's annual September gathering to celebrate the New Year, he was shocked when 12 well-built men ordered him out of his car.
"I opened the window of my car but they ordered me to get out. I wanted to know if I had done something wrong.
"They broke the handle of my car, forcibly opened the door, dragged me out and beat me up," he said.
Koma said he believed the church might have a grudge against him after the 2008 incident "because the men kept on telling me that I was going to pay for putting the church in a bad light."
He said he would report the matter to the HRC.
Attempts to get comment from the ZCC failed.
