Wannabe Popstars swamp mall

Sep 7, 2010 | Moleboheng Tladi | 7 comments

THE organisers only expected 2000 wannabe Popstars to show up but 5000 pitched up at Maponya Mall, Soweto, for auditions on Saturday.

And there were only 20 spots. etv's Matlapulana Ragoasha said youngsters from all the provinces descended on Soweto.

"People began lining up for registration at 6pm on Friday.

"By midday on Saturday 1000 contestants had registered and were impatiently waiting to show off their vocal skills. Many travelled from Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, North West and Limpopo to impress the judges."

One of the judges, musician Zwai Bala, said in a press release: "We've had an outstanding turnout in Johannesburg.

"We managed to sift out the ones we thought were not capable of competing on a national level.

"The next phase will be arduous, so we didn't want to waste anybody's time. The reality is that the music industry is harsh."

Ragoasha said emotions ran high when the Brilliant Boys Band from Mohlakeng in Randfontein lined up in front of judges to perform.

The group is made up of five friends.

Ragoasha said: "Azania (Ndoro) and Zwai decided to give the band a chance to perform individually and later as a group before making a choice on who would go through to the next round. Only Musawenkosi Mdudumawa made it through and had to leave the rest of his band members behind."

The last leg of the auditions will be at Centurion Mall on Saturday and Sunday.

Torso

Popstars is a waste of effort. Till this day we have not had a musical success from the show. I dont know what happened to Thembisile, one girl who should have made it very far but didnt. Jamali were a disappointment, solid first album, then wack ass second house influenced album. The show does bring back memories though lol. Goodluck to all participants.
