Soweto nurse's home petrol-bombed

Sep 6, 2010 | Sapa | 17 comments

A nurse suffered burn wounds after her house was petrol bombed in Soweto in the early hours of this morning

"One house belonging to a nurse got petrol bombed," said police Inspector Kay Makhubele.

She suffered burn wounds to her hands but was not hospitalised. "She said she was going to the doctor," Makhubele said.

Her house and belongings were damaged in the fire.

The petrol bomb was thrown at her house around 2.30am in Protea Glen.

Another nurse from Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital was seriously hurt in an attack on Friday evening.

Lynette Dube sustained head injuries after being badly beaten, allegedly by striking workers for turning up at  work.

And last week, a nurse was stabbed at a hospital in Pietermaritzburg. In addition, a woman who works at the Eastern Cape Health MEC's office had her car set alight by strikers. Another nurse was taken hostage, but fortunately released unharmed.

Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane on Sunday condemned violence by striking public servants, saying that differences between people were no reason to hurt or kill.

"Our differences should not degenerate into senseless killing of  fellow human beings," she said in prepared remarks to hospital management and workers at Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital.

Provincial commissioner of police Mzwandile Petros said police resources would be intensified to ensure protection of non-striking workers.

Strikers have no rights to victimise those who want to go to work - it is their rights too! This strike is turning into a nightmare!

@Garang

I don't buy it, "Apartheid" is to blame for petrol bombing a nurses home?

Apartheid was to blame for alot of bad things, but this is a stretch.
