Prisons spends R1.5m on 50 TVs

Sep 2, 2010 | Sapa | 53 comments

This is a cost of R31,021 each. For that much money, how fancy were these TV sets?!

The correctional services department has spent over R1.5 million to install 50 television sets in the new Kimberley Prison - a cost of R31,021 each.

In written reply to a parliamentary question by James Selfe of the Democratic Alliance, Correctional Services Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said the contract was awarded to Sizwe Business Networking.

The total cost of the installation contract was R1,551,049 for 50 television sets to be delivered.

The intention was to complete installation by June 10, but a delay in sourcing industrial brackets led to the completion of installation on June 18, she said.

I am pretty certain that they bought the new LED,BLU RAY big screen tv's. Those prisoners are very fortunate considering that law abiding citizens cannot afford a R31,021 tv. This money should be going towards the saaries of public servants who work they butts off each and every single day

Starring

Rediculous, firstly I believe prices have been ballooned. I mean you and I knows exactly how much does a plasma TV cost. Secondly I dont understand why inmates are granted opportunity to watch TV. I mean they resisted to be part of the society. What do they need to know about the society. After all ist neccessary to buy plasmas that some of us cant even afford though we wake up every morning? That money could have become handy in giving the poor busaries. Realy our goverment its failing us. We should look at things in a true perspective, DA this days raise important questions I should applaud the for that.

This is ridiculous, really! Now they can't find a way of issuing authentic tenders and they resort to creating unnecessary tenders!
Since when criminals must deserve living in luxury, when the people they were robbing, killing, raping etc are still traumatised and did not even receive support from Govt.

SLOWETAN,

this is old news, it was doing the rounds the past couple of days on the other news sites.

anyway a normal plasma costs about R5000.00 to R10 000.00

clearly someone charged the dept triple the amount and pocketed the rest.

and then you tell us there is not money to pay public servants when this is a clear sign of wasteful expenditure.

In any case why are murderers and thieves being rewarded with watching television anyway? are they not supposed to be doing hard time? This justice system stinks

The government wasting money on useless criminals but fails to give to people who generate the same money with taxes. South Africa is shame. The crime will always increase because if I cannot affort TV,better resources, or satrving I just commit crime knowing that they going to treat me with care in prison.

Machismo

well! well!
Here is The maths: take out your calculators
Plasma TV = R10 000 (x50)
Istalling Brackets = R10 000 (x50)
Bribe = R10 000 (x50)
transporting the goods using my brothers opel Corsa = R1 021 ( x 50)
Or the shop did deliver this goods free and 50 prison warders will each receive this money to treat prisoners kindly

there you go South Africans at least it adds up :-)
