R500,000 spent to fire aide, Nyanda reveals
AUDITORS connected to Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda's family business were paid to investigate an official at his department.
The official was subsequently fired.
Nyanda also revealed yesterday that his department had spent about R500,000 on firing chief director of human resources Basani Baloyi.
Nyanda made the revelations in a written reply to a parliamentary question from the Congress of the People's Juli Killian.
Baloyi was fired in September last year only to be reinstated last month. The department is now paying Baloyi and her replacement to do the same job.
Killian described this as the public paying the cost of a witch-hunt against Baloyi.
He asked Nyanda whether he had followed the correct procedures in hiring Ntumba Incorporated, which also audits the books of his private firm - Abalozi Security Risk Advisory Services, formerly known as General Nyanda Security Risk Advisory Services.
"Yes, the required process was followed," Nyanda replied.
But Killian told Sowetan she would be probing further. "My information is that there was no tender process. And we still want to know how much this forensic audit cost the public."
Nyanda said: "The total cost paid for the presiding officer to chair the hearing and the departmental representative to lead evidence amounts to R450129,50."
But Killian told Sowetan she wanted Nyanda to reveal the full amount he spent on firing Baloyi, including the amount spent on lawyers who represented the department when Baloyi took the matter to the Labour Court.
Earlier this month City Press reported that Ntumba Incorporated was also auditing the books of Sentech - the government's broadcast signal distributor, which comes under the ministry's control.
According to the report, Ntumba Incorporated authorised six payments from Sentech of more than R1 million to "themselves and a board member who hired them".
