Plea for volunteers to help pupils

Aug 30, 2010 | Tebogo Monama | 1 comments

MATRIC pupils around the country were due to start with their preliminary examinations today.

This weekend the Department of Basic Education put an advert in newspapers calling for volunteers to help pupils with their school work.

The advert read: "The department is busy setting up learning centres, particularly for Grade 12 learners, so that they can complete their curriculum and begin meaningful revision before their examinations begin on 2 October 2010.

"We call on those who are experts in the subjects that are offered in matric to offer their services to assist during this period and beyond. The department will support the learning centres with materials."

People interested in volunteering can contact the department's strike hotline on 0800 202 933 or e-mail classof2010@dbe.gov.za with names and full contact details, ID number, time available, indication of whether they would offer their services in a learning centre for Grade 12 or a primary or lower secondary, town and province where they would be available.

Northern Cape, North West, Gauteng, Free State and Eastern Cape have postponed preliminary exams.

Gauteng said preliminary exams due to start next week would start two weeks later than previously scheduled.
