Man accused of raping his 'sexy' niece

Aug 30, 2010 | Masoka Dube | 69 comments

A MPUMALANGA man accused of raping his 10-year-old niece, claiming that she was sexy, has appeared in the Masoyi magistrate's court.

The 31-year-old man from Chochocho near White River told the court "the devil made me do it".

He said he could not control himself when he saw the child playing next to him.

He was remanded in custody pending his next court appearance on September 9.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the child's identity, was arrested on Friday morning after the child's mother reported the alleged rape to the police.

Masoyi police spokesperson Inspector Jiyela Sibiya said the child's mother became suspicious after she noticed several changes in her child's behaviour.

"The man was continuously raping the child when her mother was away," Sibiya said.

"The child confirmed that the man had raped her several times. She (the victim) kept the matter secret after the accused threatened her.

"It transpired that last week the man ordered the little girl into his room, where he undressed her and raped her."

Sibiya has urged parents not to leave their children in the care of their male relatives.

"The parents must make it a habit to take their kids with them when they know that they won't be around for a while," Sibiya said.

Mpumalanga Childline provincial coordinator Benita Nel said parents should teach their children to alert them in case someone touched their private parts.

"Parents must not trust anyone. You will never know the rapist until he rapes a person," said Nel.

"Most rape cases take place between people who know one another very well."

It is seldom that strangers rape children, it is almost always the people closest to them.

Parents need to educate children on the difference between respect and being taken advantage of. I think what kills us often as Africans is that we install the importance of respect and we forget to put enough emphasis on the fact that it is ok to say no to an adult if things dont feel good.

Life has changed dramatically, and sometimes for the worst. We need to find new ways to educate our children. Our lessons in life should also be based on the life that we are exposed to.

There is no devil that tempted you, you did it purposely. That is why you raped her several times and claim she is sexy.
But anyway you (rapist) knew that you will not suffer for your deeds since our justice system is lenient on people like you.
