Grandma, four grandchildren hacked to death

AN 85-YEAR-OLD grandmother and her four grandchildren were hacked to death in their home in Ngqeleni, Eastern Cape police said yesterday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said the grandmother and her four grandchildren - three boys aged 17, 10 and 9, and a five-year-old girl - were allegedly killed when an unknown number of suspects entered through their window and hacked them to death on Saturday night.

Police suspected the attackers may have used a bush knife or a panga, but no weapon was found at the scene.

Fatyela said the children's mother and father lived at their places of work in Johannesburg and were not in the house at the time of the attack.

"Nothing was stolen from the house, so we don't believe the motive was robbery," Fatyela said.

Police had not arrested any suspects yet and did not know what the motive behind the attack was.
