Govt signs wage deal - Gives unions 21 days to sign (or not)

Aug 19, 2010 | I-Net Bridge | 50 comments

The government today unilaterally signed the draft wage deal for the public sector and indicated it would implement this deal in three weeks time.

The signing comes the day after public service unions warned the government against this unilateral move.

The Public Service and Administration Department said the acting director-general of the department, Kenny Govender, today signed off the draft wage offer for implementation on behalf of government.

The department said the offer will be on the table for 21 days in which labour can make a decision to sign it and failing that, it will be "implementable".

The government is offering a 7% wage increase and 700 rand a month housing allowance, but the unions are insisting on an 8.6% wage increase and 1,000 rand housing allowance.

Mugwena Maluleke, who was speaking on behalf of Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) affiliated unions, said on Wednesday that the unions had advised government not to unilaterally sign the deal, noting that this would anger members even more. If the government went ahead and implemented the wage deal, Maluleke said unions would "respond appropriately".

Public Service and Administration Minister Richard Boloyi reiterated on Thursday that the government would continue in its efforts for further collective engagement with labour on:

  • the review of the remuneration policy;
  • synchronisation of salary negotiations with the Government Budget cycle;
  • return to April as the implementation month for salary settlement;
  • building of a sustainable capacity in their negotiators; as well as
  • the introduction of a multi-term focus in salary negotiations.

I'm sure if there is someone laughing his butt off it must be Thabo Mbeki.

People kicked him out like a dog, too impatient to await the "savior" Jacob Zuma to rescue them from the grip of the evil pipe smoking single malt whiskey drinking tyrant.

But alas, the savior is seemingly turning out to be even worse than his predecessor, creating useless Ministries, his Ministers driving even more expensive cars than the previous "regime", bailing out mismanaged Govt entities, Ministers living like kings in million rand mansion. Direct relatives being awarded billions worth in tenders and shares.

Almost every week an expose on how some top Govt official was/is being corrupt.

And will they give CIVIL SLAVES the much needed increase they rightfully deserve?

the respond is a BIG fat middle finger and a take it or leave it poultry 7%

God help us? No he says I will not help you.

@ CheeseBoy.. u r so rite bra.. Vavi and his cronies were so quick to judge T-Man and so quick to boot him out like a dog, just so their man JZ can come in and look after them. And it would seem, he has turned his back away from the very same working class he so purpoted to serve! How can a President earn 2.24Million per annum, when a teacher earns a mere R6000 per month!! Loud mouth Vavi himself earns so much money, it hurts!
Something there is so wrong... and yet the civil servants continue to blindly follow this government. Are we so afraid of change as a people??? We need to quickly move to a time where we will not be afraid to change regimes if they r not serving our needs as a people. The ANC government remains very comfortable because the people continue to follow it blindly!! This needs to change!!

I fully agree with comments from CheeseB and Lelo.

But, is this not the same Zuma administration they (trade unions and the public servants) thought would change everything to be pro-poor?
Look who's benefitting from all of this mess, it's JZ, his family and everyone linked to him. If you still can't follow me, read up on the scandalous BBEEE deal signed by ArcelorMittal SA and Ayigobi consortium...

eish jo there more you list all the wrongs the more i become umbrageous i dn't dispute the votes but why is it that it's hard for the gvt to say yes but yet easy 2 protect corruption and condone it??? no it's totally unacceptable, if i was in the leadership of the union i wld implement a strategy such just if the gvt does not pay for stay away then we the union pay back our members our gvt are doing the public wrong abantwana babo ba attend ama private schools/overseas schools and the immediate family and friends attend private clinics and hospitals at the expense of the public servants it's wrong and IT"S CRIME

President Zuma is clever

Like Africa4Africans is alluding to he has grabbed his piece of the pie through his son Duduzane Zuma ( 1 Billion)

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe has acquired his cut ( 1 Billion as well) through his girlfriend. Their hands are clean, they want us to believe.
