Probe exposes rape of young girls at school

THE Mpumalanga department of education has confirmed that its preliminary investigations into a sex scandal involving primary school pupils is proving to be true.

Provincial education spokesperson Jasper Zwane said yesterday that officials from the department had been sent to Pugishe Primary School in Shangaanhill near Bushbuckridge.

'As we said before, we were not aware of the incidents, But according to the preliminary report we received after your newspaper published the story last week, it seems to be true that young girls are being molested at the school,' he said.

'Our officials are out there taking statements before we can have a final report and decide on what action to take.'

Sowetan published an exposé on July 4 exposing that girls between the ages of 9 and 12 had allegedly been sexually assaulted by male classmates.

Officials were yesterday interviewing several people, including teachers, pupils and parents.

When Sowetan exposed the sex scandal three parents revealed that their daughters had been raped in classrooms since April this year by two boys aged 12.

One of the parents, who cannot be identified to protect the children, had said the matter had come to light after one of the boys asked another boy for 'manpower' because his wives (female pupils) 'were becoming many by the day'.

'The boy who had been asked to provide manpower spilt the beans by telling the teachers about the sex scandal in the classroom. The teachers called us to the school and informed us about the incidents,' the 27-year-old mother said.

She said most parents got the shock of their lives when the principal, who was only identified as Mrs Sedibe, demanded that each victim's parent pay R300 for a pregnancy test.

Zwane said the wellbeing of pupils at the school was the department's priority, especially for the girls since it was Women's Month.

Mpumalanga Childline director Benita Nel expressed shock at the revelations.

'We have to do something. We can't lie low because the future of our children is at stake here.'
