Schoolboys rape girls in classroom
THE Pugishe Primary School in Shangaan Hill near Bushbuckridge is trying to sweep a sex scandal involving pupils aged between 9 and 12 under the carpet.
At least three parents told Sowetan that their daughters had been raped in the classrooms by two boys aged 12 since April this year.
One of the parents, who cannot be identified to protect the children, said the matter came to light after one of the boys asked another boy for "manpower because his wives were becoming many by day".
"The boy who had been asked to provide manpower spilled the beans by telling the teachers about the sex activities in the classroom.
"The teachers called us to the school to tell us about the incidents," the 27-year-old mother said.
She said most parents got the shock of their lives when the school principal, who was only identified as Mrs Sedibe, demanded that each victim's parent pay R300 for a doctor to check the girls.
"The school clerk, who is known to me as Pastor Themba, even came to my workplace and demanded the R300, saying he had been sent by the principal to collect money with which to pay the doctor for checking if my girl had in fact been raped," the mother said.
"I did not have the money and was also under the impression that the school was supposed to take responsibility for such payments because the rapes happened in school."
Another parent accused the school of refusing to open rape charges against the boys because the management did not want the school to have a bad name.
"The school already has a bad name because the boys take advantage of our daughters," the mother said.
Both pastor Themba and Sedibe quickly dropped their phones and refused to give their first names.
"I don't want to comment. I am not going to give you my first name and I know nothing," Sedibe said.
Provincial education spokesperson Jasper Zwane said the department was unaware of the matter but viewed it as serious and would immediately institute investigations.
