Xingwana wields axe at corrupt officials

Jul 30, 2010 | Edward Tsumele | 4 comments

THE Minister of Arts and Culture Lulu Xingwana has dismissed top officials who were earlier placed on suspension over misconduct and corruption.

The top officials include former deputy director-general Sydney Selepe and acting deputy director-general Tale Motsepe.

Other officials dismissed are Mzukisi Madlavu, Thandi Mdlela, Fikile Dilika, Lindi Ndebele-Koka, Sipho Ndlovu and eight provincial co-ordinators of the investing in culture programme.

Sowetan reported earlier this year that in her efforts to clean up the department, Xingwana had examined the department's reports of internal audit and Gobodo Forensic Services.

She was shocked to find allegations of serious irregularities and possible acts of fraud and corruption on the part of officials.

The department confirmed that former director for investing in culture, Nomvula Mbangela, resigned before the forensic investigation was finalised.

"The department is holding her accountable for the losses incurred as a result of her failure to effectively manage the funds disbursed by investing in cultural projects," said the minister's spokesperson Lisa Combrinck yesterday.

"The legal process is under way to recover the funds."

It is understood that Xingwana has also requested the Special Investigations Unit to assist in terms of criminal prosecutions and the recovery of funds.

"The department will leave no stone unturned to uproot corruption in order to ensure that arts practitioners and the public in general are the beneficiaries of the department's programmes," Xingwana said.

None of the fired officials could be reached for comment by the time of going to press last night.
