Proud nation

ON SUNDAY, International Nelson Mandela Day, the world could not help but take note of us - South Africans. We really are a special folk!

Just as they were overwhelmed with the saint-like persona of Madiba turning 92, our countrymen continued to fly the flag high. After almost a year of inactivity, Caster Semenya returned to the pinnacle of the 800m with a win in Finland.

But perhaps the biggest sign of how far we have come as a people was in the cacophony of celebrations that greeted Louis Oosthuizen's triumph at the British Open. For those caught up in the excitement - black and white - it did not matter that our new golfing hero was Afrikaner. Having turned professional only eight years ago, the 27-year-old's claim on the Claret Jug is particularly sweet.

He's now only the third South African to snatch a win in this prestigious tournament.
