Three seriously injured in taxi crash

THREE people were seriously injured when a taxi collided with a stationary bakkie in West Street in the Durban CBD early yesterday morning

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said  when ER24  paramedics arrived on the  scene they were shocked to  find a taxi  lying on its side, blocking two lanes of the   road, and a bakkie completely destroyed  in a parking  bay next to the taxi.

“Three occupants from the taxi were  found lying outside  the taxi, complaining  of severe neck and back injuries,”  Banks  said.

“They were stabilised and transported  to Life Entabeni  Hospital in a serious but  stable condition. No one else  was injured  in the accident.”

The owner of the bakkie, looked in  shock at his bakkie,  which was a write-off.  He was only grateful to be alive.

It is unclear what caused the taxi driver  to lose control of  his vehicle.

In another incident a pedestrian was  killed on the N3  Durban between the  Mariannhill Toll Plaza and  Richmond  road on-ramp near Pinetown on Saturday   evening.

ER24 and emergency rescue services  said they arrived  on the scene to find a  male in his late 20s lying in the far  right  hand lane of the freeway.

The patient had sustained fatal head  injuries and was  declared dead on the  scene.

“Emergency personnel are asking  members of the  public who walk on freeways or even in residential areas  at night  to wear bright clothing or walk where  there is  sufficient light.

“It is very difficult for motorists to see  pedestrians  walking at night wearing  dark clothing, especially on  freeways,”  Banks said.
