NOW that the country has hosted a successful Fifa World Cup, President Jacob Zuma wants South Africa to have a go at the Olympic Games.

Speaking at a post-World Cup briefing in Sandton, Johannesburg, yesterday Zuma said South Africa has proved that it is ready to host major events such as the Olympics.

"The year 2020 will be an important year for Olympics. Africa needs to host some of these big events," Zuma said.

"We have always wanted to host the Olympics and our appetite has not died.

"We wanted the 1996 Olympics to come to South Africa. Cape Town and Durban were fighting to host them. At the time we did not have the infrastructure. Now that the 2010 World Cup has come, we have shown the world that we have the capacity to hold world events.

Of the World Cup Zuma said: "We did it. We did it successfully. We did not do it alone. We did it with Africa and the support of the world. The world was united in diversity.

"As we draw the curtain on the 2010 Fifa World Cup, we now turn our focus on the fortunes of our Springbok rugby team in the Tri-Nations series," he said

"Therefore, do not stack away those rainbow nation flags just yet. National duty still calls."
